The Rider University wrestling team fell to Central Michigan, 24-12, in a Mid-American Conference road dual on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Broncs to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. It was the opening dual meet for the host Chippewas.

The match slipped away early after Bryan Miraglia stepped in at 149 pounds and opened the match for the Broncs with an encouraging 9-5 decision over Corbyn Munson. But then Alec Bobchin filled in at 157 pounds for injured Jake Silverstein and fell to Johnny Lovett, 6-2.

Joe Casey - who sat out the Keystone Classic with a minor injury and missed all of last season - was forced to injury default his 165-pound match, leaving Rider down 9-3. Central Michigan extended its lead to 12-3 when Bret Fedwa (174) edged Shane Reitsma, 9-6.

George Walton (184) kept Rider in it with a 7-6 win over Ben Cushman, but Central Michigan essentially put it away with wins at 197 and 285.

Matt Correnti (197) took an early lead, but lost to Aaron Bolo, 10-4. True freshman David Szuba was then pinned by No. 11 Matt Stencel - all three of Szuba’s losses this season are by fall - as Rider fell behind 21-6.

Tyler Klinsky (125) and Richie Koehler (133) notched decisions for the Broncs’ third and fourth wins, giving them a chance to split the bouts 5-5.

But Quinn Kinner - who like Casey missed the Keystone Classic with injury - dropped a 10-8 decision to Dresdon Simon in the final match at 141 pounds after leading 7-2 heading into the final period. Simon is the eighth-ranked wrestler in the country, and it is Kinner’s second close loss to a ranked wrestler after leading in the third period.

Rider returns to competition on Jan. 1 at the Southern Scuffle and the time off might be good for a banged-up team.
